Dunlite Wind Turbines
Last updated 2010 07 04

Lloyd Dunn (1912-1978) founded Dunlite in 1935. Lloyd and his crew built excellent wind turbines at their plant in Hindmarsh, Australia. The company has been sold and the new owners do not build wind turbines nor support the ones that the Dunn family manufactured.

Quirk’s Victory Light Company in Bellevue Hill, NSW, Australia, also sold these machines under the Quirk's name. Quirk’s is now a solar energy business in Sydney Australia. When I contacted them, the current staff was completely unaware that wind turbines were ever sold with their name on them. These machines were imported into Canada under both names. The documentation is virtually identical with only the name changed.

After I got my first type BP machine running, I decided to post some information about it to help other owners. Soon, I began receiving many interesting e-mails from Dunn family members and Dunlite owners. The amount of interest shown has prompted me to expand this page to include all the information that I can collect on the Dunlite wind turbines. So far, all of the history, newspaper clippings, and Dunlite brochures have come from Lloyd Dunn's daughter Lesley Beresford and from Charlie Nottle, one of his former employees.

I am providing this information to anyone who may need it to service or restore a Dunlite wind turbine. The only Dunlites I've seen are the 2kw type BP machines so I can't offer any assistance with any other model. However,  Malcolm Barko can probably help you and he can supply “90% of the parts” from his business, Southwest Solar Portwind in Portland, Victoria, Australia. (Replacement blades have to be custom made).

Thank you to the many Dunlite wind turbine owners who have contributed  to the creation of this site by donating copies of their manuals and photos.

If you live in North America and have an unwanted Dunlite machine, I would be more than happy to give it a new home!

Dunlite History & Newspaper Clippings

These files are parts of Dunlite history documents that were supplied by the daughter of company founder, L. B. Dunn. If anyone has a copy of the missing pages, please send me a copy .

History-1
This appears to be the older of the two history documents by several years. The original document could not be scanned using OCR so it was retyped using a word processor. Care was taken to ensure that spelling, format and the font of the original document were retained as closely as possible. Page 1 was missing.

History-2
The original document was scanned using optical character recognition and “touched up” using a word processor. Care was taken to ensure that the format and the font of the original typewriter were retained. Pages 1 & 2 were missing.

Events in the History of Dunlite
This is a time-line that covers events from 1936 to 1978. There was a hand written correction of one item that was out of sequence so I incorporated that change. Thus this document does not look identical to the original but it is very close.

The CAD drawings are "reverse engineered" (drawn from existing machine parts). There may have been production run changes and I'm not a professional deaftsman so I can't guarantee their accuracy. The CAD drawings are in .dxf format and may be viewed or modified using any CAD software. The Acrobat (.pdf) documents require Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader which is free from www.adobe.com.

Although the manual is in Acrobat format, it was built from jpg scans rather than scanning directly into Acrobat. I would like to give credit to the Australian owner of the machine who sent me the scans but I've lost his e-mail address and unfortunately pages 2 & 3 are missing so I can't ask him for the missing pages. Thanks to Allan White of Australia for the photo.
